Cricket 1883
334 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, august 23 , iss3. Shrewsbury celebrated his return to the eleven by some of the finest play he had ever shown. During the previous winter he had been starring in Australia with a team organised by himself j in conjunction with Alfred Shaw and James I Lillywhite, and the tour proved a success, both I financially and from the stand-point of good cricket. Owing to ill health he did not leave England till after tho rest of tho party, but his j play was consistently excellent throughout, and in the batting averages he was fourth to Ulyett, Bates and Barlow, having an aggregate of 810 for thirty-one completed innings. The trip evi dently restored hi 3 health, for his play in Eng land last summer was better than any he had previously shown, and his splendid innings of 207, on the August Bank Holiday, at the Oval, for Notts v. Surrey, will long be remembered as the highest ever made by a professional on the Surrey Ground. The present season has found Shrewsbury a more reliable batsman than ever. It would be tedious to recapitulate his many excellent performances, but his highest score (98) was obtained against Sussex, at Nottingham, and up to Saturday last he had the best figures of a professional in im portant matches, having obtained 852 runs in twenty-three innings for an average of 37.1. At the present time Shrewsbury is quite the equal of any professional batsman. He plays the game thoroughly and watches the ball unceas ingly. Though never taking a liberty he scores fast when he gets set, as he drives well and his wrist play is, in addition, very smart. In many respects he is not unlike Richard Daft, on whose model his play has apparently been shaped, and his style of batting is singularly good. In the field he is to be trusted anywhere. As he covers a lot of ground he used to be generally placed in the out-field, but this year he has taken point for Notts, and in that position has few superiors. Shrewsbury is in partnership with Alfred tihaw as a cricket outfitter at Carrington Street Bridge, Nottingham. Houston, b Canefield .
