Cricket 1883

AUGUST 16, 1888. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 331 LANGASHIKE AND YORKSHIRE v. ENGLAND. W illia m M ycroft ’ s B en efit . Noprofessional cricketer bas done better service for a county thanWilliam Mycrcft, on whose be half thematch concluded atDerby yesterday was arranged by the Committee of the Derbyshire Club. It is consequently gratifying to find that although the sides were by no means repre sentative, and the weather was not altogether favourable, the spectators mustered in goodly numbers on Monday and Tuesday, according to a fair computation, about 4,000 on each day. At the outset, the Counties appeared to have the better side, but the game was in favour of the England Eleven throughout, and they won with plenty to spare by an innings and 19 runs. The first innings of the two counties was of very brief duration, and though in the second they made a slightly better show, themajoritycould dolittle with the bowling of Barnes, who was credited with six out of nine wickets. The stand made by Shrewsburyand Barnes, who raised the England score from 1 for one to 110 for two wickets, was thefeature of the first day’s batting, and on the second Platts and Hearne played equally good cricket for the same side, adding 87 runs while they weretogether. Crosslanddelivered 39 overs and 3 balls for 45 runs and 7 wickets. L ancashire and Y orkshire . Firrt Innings. T h e R eturn M atch , The return match between the abtve counties concluded at Taunton yesterday, tnded, as did the first, in a win for Gloucestershire, this time by eight wickets. The ground was in excellent condition, and as will be seen from the appended score, 1J015 runs were made for 32 wickets, an average of 32^ runs. The features of the game weretho fine innings of Messrs. Mcberly and Sainsbury for their respective sides, The former did not give a chance until hewas caught for 121 , and Mr. Sainsbury’s 116 was also a brilliant dis play of batting. It is a rare achievement for a batsman tomake two such scores as 59 and 116 in a county match, and his play contributed greatly to the creditable showof the Somerset shire eleven. Considering that they followed on in a minority of 192 runs, the plucky *way in which they played an almost hopeless game was most commendable. Score and analysis. G lo u c e ste r sh ir e .
