Studd’s effective all round play, however, had much to do in in fluencing the result in favour of Middlesex, and his batting and bowling chiefly contributed to its easy victory. He gave a chance to the wicket keeper when he had made twenty, and a second when he had reached ninety-eight, but his score of 105, net out, was altogether a very brilliant display of batting. Hewas at the wicketswhile 222 runs were got, and it is worthy of note that this is the first innings of three figures he has scored tor Middlesex. Kent were 78 runs to the bad when they went in a second time, and un fortunately for themLord Harris, who had scored 79 out of 112 in the first innings, had to retire to attend the House of Lords when he was well set, on the second day. By mutual agreement Le would have been allowed to return to the wickets on the tLird morning had Kent stayed in, but after his retirement things went very badly for them. By excellent cricket Hearne and Mr. Tylecote saved the innings, but at 84 these two batsmen aswell as Hon. Ivo Bligh and Mr. Patterson were all dismissed, and though at onetime the score was 84 with only a wicket down the innings closed for 118. Middlesex had only 41 to win, and these were got for the loss of one batsman. Kent, as in the first match, was thus beaten by nine wickets, Mr. C. T. Studd and Burton bowled with great succes for Middle sex. The former took ten wickets for 124 runs THE CANTERBURY W E EK . MIDDLESEX v. KENT. The collapse of the Kentish eleven in their second innings brought the forty-second Canter bury week to a premature termination on Friday night. On the first day some excellent cricket was shown, and there seemed every chance of a K ent . First Innings. Mr. L. Wilson, c Lyttelton, b C .T . Studd ..................0 Hon.
