Cricket 1883

a u g u s t 16, 1883. CRtCKET ; A WEEKLY RECOED OF THE GAME, 3 2 5 I t is rare enough for a batsman to carry his bat through the innings in any kind of contest. In a match, though, between Eoyston and Islington Albion, on Royston Heath on Bank Holiday, this feat was achieved twice. J. H. Beaumont went in first for the Albion, and was not out at the finish for 72 out of 102. On the other side, too, Rev. C. 0 . Miles carried his bat through the innings for 61 out of 122, exactly half of the total. T h e Uppingham Rovers experienced their first defeat since 1879 at Southamp ton on Tuesday, when Hampshire beat them, minus Mr. H. Rotherham, by 39 runs. Their seven matches of the present tour up to date showthe foliowingresults:— Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Derby shire Gentlemen, Huddersfield, and Brad ford, all drawn ; Yorkshire Gentlemen, won ; and Hampshire, lost. Mr. A. P. Lucas has made three hundreds, 102 v. Leicestershire, 118 (not out) v. Bradford, and 120 v. Yorkshire Gentlemen. T h e Surrey County Eleven will play Eighteen Colts, Amateur andProfessional, at the Oval on September 10 and 11. In all probability a match between two elevens under 19 years of age will also be brought off next month. A p e c u l i a r incident occurred during the course of the Lancashire innings in the match with Notts at Manchester on Saturday, whileMr.D. Q.Steel wasbatting, This is the version of the Athletic News. Sherwin, with his hands close to the wickets* took the ball on the off-side and appealed for a catch, the leg bail falling after the leather had settled in his hands. Rowbotham answered “ not out,” giving a like reply when asked if D. Q. was bowled. Panter was then appealed to, and said he was not in a position to state whether the ball removed the bail, but Sherwin did not touch the stumps. There was nothing for it, therefore, but to continue the game, the conclusionbeing that the bail was blown off by a gust of wind. The following sta'istics will show the relative positions of first-class counties in Inter-County matches up to date. Won. Loet. Drawn. Surrey put their full strength into the field at theOval onMouday when theymet Leicestershire for the second time, and the result was an easy victory by ten wickets—a revenge for their defeat at Leicester by seven runs. Winning the toss, they lost five of their best batsmen for 57 runs, but a determined stand by Messrs. Diver and Bainbridge, who put on 98 runs in forty minutes, entirely altered the aspect of thegame, and tho innings reached 255, Mr. M. P. Bow den again plajing good cricket for his forty-two not out. Mr. Diver’s batting was most brilliant. His 84 included fifteen fours, two threes, six twos, and only six singles. Leicestershire failed to save the follow-on by six runs, and Mr. Diver and Maurice Read knocked off the 67 Surrey wanted to win iu 35minutes. Warren’s second score of54 not out for Leicestershire, though not faultless, was got by capital cricket. S urrey . First Iunings. Mr. E. J. Diver,b Rylott 84 Abel, c Buswell,b Rylott 0 Mr. K. J.
