Cricket 1883

3 1 8 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, a u g u s t ie, isss. argument was :—“ Men almost invariably do bowl hand above the shoulder, but high delivery will not give much spin to the ball. Let men bowl as they like, and they will bowl as low as they do now, and be a law unto themselves.” This proved true of the old bowlers. Men like Grundy bowled, and bowled shooters as before. One here and there, like Allan Hill, may bowl low, too, but almost all have learnt to use the arm a^ nature prompted. That is not horizon tally the line of the, least muscular power, but high over head, good for dangerous bumpers, not for scientific spin. Now we have the same difficulty as to throw ing, that we used to have to enforce the law of low delivery. It is difficult to define a throw, but I would call attention to this, that avoiding the quiver of the wrist, there ie a way of throw ing as hard as you please with a whirl of a straight arm, finding a fulcrum, and seemingly revolving on the advancedleft foot. This I have often seen, but it passes unchallenged. Reverting to “ slows” proper, itwere well worth •whileof someyoungplayers to make apoint of it, andpractise it in good earnest as he would any otherbowling. Accuracy may be attained, and that is essential. There mu«t be spin and twist, both more easy than with other bowling, and there must be elevation. The old slow bowlers, Budd and Clarke, bowled fromthe hip—their de liverywas a kindof chuck. Clarke said, “ First, nothing of the knee-high delivery will do, and without elevation men will judge the length too soon, and secondly, unless you learn tohand in a good fast one when they take liberties with you, spin gives not only twist, but an abruptrise, and makes also the most decisive ball, one that hangs in the air. If you bowl too slowmen wjll run in andmeet the ball full pitch.” “ It takes a cer tain pace, ” saidClarke, “ tomake a good ball.” W.Goodridge, who played for the Free Foresters, excelled in slows. He told me that he was con tinually playing with and spinning a ball, and learning lightness of hand and to make a spin quite natural to his delivery. But—enough for once.” THE INCAPABLES W E EK .
