Cricket 1883
a u g u s t 9, 1883. CRICKET ; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A w e l l known amateur cricketer writes as follows. “ In a match played at Uxbridge on Bank' Holiday between the Uxbridge and Oaklands clubs, one of the Uxbridge played a ball. It fell to the ground and was rebounding towards the wicket, when trying to prevent it hitting his stumps he hit it a second time and was caught by the wicket keeper. Was he out ? ” Answer. Decidedly not. K.J. K k y , the Cliftonion of whom I have made mention more than once in these notes, will make his first appearance this season for Surrey against Leicestershire at the Oval,- on Monday. The recent additions to the Surrey eleven can hardly be called veterans. M. P. Bowden is seventeen, Henderson just eighteen, and Messrs. Bainbridge and Key very young for County cricket. S u r r e y has not been beaten in a Couuty match this season at the Oval. It is some years, I fancy, since the eleven could make such a claim. The following are the averages of the most successful batsmen of the season. They are compiled from County and other important matches, and calculated up to Saturday last. No batsmen are inserted who have played in less than sixteen innings :— Completed Highest! Innings. Runs. Score. Average. W. W . Read ........ 1222 168 43.18 C. T.
