Somersetshire, though represented by a strong eleven, suffered a very decisive defeat at the hands of Surreyin their first match of the season, at Kennington Oval on Thursday and Friday last. The wicket, the same on which Surrey scored 650 in May, against Hants, was in splen did condition, but the Somersetshire batsmen shaped very badly against Barratt, and in theii two innings they only realised an aggregate of 286. The majority of the Surrey eleven scored freely against the weakbowling of Somersetshire and the total reached 449, Mr. Diver being chief contributor, with a freely hit score of 98. M. P. Bowden, of ihe DulwichCollege eleven made his debut for Surrey in this match. He played in very promising style for his 38 and kept wicket exceedingly well, showing great smart ness as well as judgment, In Somersetshire’s first innings, he caught three and stumped one batsman. He bids fair to be anacquisition to the County. Surrey won by an innings and 213 runs. S omersetshire .
