The wicke1, though a little slow at the outset from recent rains, was of a very different kind to tbat]on which the two counties had to perform earlier in the week at Holbeck, and the frequenters of the Surrey ground enjoyed what they have not had for some years, a full day’s cricket on Saturday. On the first innings York shire had an advantage of only fifteen runs, but a determined stand by Mr. Lumb and Emmect, who put on 82 runs for the eighthwicket, enabled them to head their first score by 70 runsj Mr. Lumb carrying out his bat for an extremely steady and well played 00. Surrey went in just before luncheon on Saturday with a heavy task before them, wanting 268 to win. They began very badly, losing Messrs. Bainbridge, Diver, J. Shuter and W. W. Read for only 34 runs. Henderson again played very sound cricket, but after making 30, he cut a ball of Harrison’s into his wicket. Seven wickets were down for 113 when Abel joined Maurice Read , but these two byexcellent cricket entirelyaltered the aspect of the game. Each had a life, Abel at the hands of Harrison at cover point, Read of Bates at short slip. Lockwood, who took the wicket in place of Hunter, who, owing to an injured finger, had Grimshaw to field for him, also appeared to make more than one mistake. Still the two professionals played most plucky as well as good cricket, and they had raised the total to 222 (109 since the last fall), when Abel was caught and bowled for 60. Only five minutes were left for play when Mr. Horner came in, and hegave a hard chance at thewicket. During the three overs left, though, he batted so carefully that time was called, Surrey having still two wickets to fall with 42 runs to win. Abel has never shown better form than on this occasion, and too much praise can not be bestowed on him for his plucky batting at the critical point. Maurice Read carried out his bat for 94, and he fairly saved the match for Surrey. He batted with great care but without allowing a loose ball to escape, and his success is the more gratifying afterhis recent run of ill-luck. There was immense excitement at the finish, and this match adds another to the many sensational finishes witnessed at the Oval this season. Three days of such good all-round cricket have not been enjoyed on the Surrey ground for a long time. The three young pro fessionals of Surrey contributed 184 out of 199 from the bat on the third day. Their perform ance in the match is hopeful for Surrey cricket. Score aud analysis.
