Cricket 1883
a u g u s t 2,1883. CRICKET; A "WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 291 RUGBY y. MARLBOROUGH. Some high scoring was tlie result of this an nual match, played at Lord’s on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. The Marlborough eleven wire reported to be above the average, and in all probability they would have won had time allowed the game to be played out. The wicket was very easy throughout, and in twodays 805 runs were scored for 33 wickets, an average of24J.Quinton appeared to be the best batsman in the Marlborough eleven, and Meyrick, who is very young, is likely to develope into a very good player. Buokland is not only a useful bat, but is a good, slow, round-arm bowler, and likely to be of use to Oxford next year. Wat son, Coles, and Harrison played excellent cricket for Rugby, but the bowling was very weak, and all-round the Marlburians were cer tainly the better eleven. The game was drawn, Marlborough wanting 78 to win with seven wickets to fall. Score and analysis :— M arlborough . First Innings. E. Buckland, b Gilson.. 41 W . A. LANCASHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. The Gloucestershire eleven on Friday last suffered a very decisive defeat in their first match of the season with Lancashire. The contest was originally to have taken place on the ground of the Liverpool Club, but the heavy rains had so interfered with the pitch there, that the executive of the Club deemed it advisable to suggest the transfer of the match to the county ground at Old Trafford, Manchester. Gloucester shire suffered severely by the absence of Messrs. Moberly, Fallen, and Cranston. On the other hand, Lancashire, though Pilling reappeared in the team, after an absence of a lew weeks from illness, had not its full strength with Mr. Royle and Robinson away, so that neither side was representative. Gloucestershire won the toss, but made avery poor show against the bowling of Mr. A. G. Steel andBarlow. The whole eleven weredismissed for a very small total of 34,and of these 27 were made by Messrs. W. G, Gracc and Townsend, the eight other batsmen contribut ing three. Barlow took five wickets for ten. Mr. Steel the other five for twenty runs. In their second innings, thanks mainly to Dr. E M. Grace, they cut abetter figure, but the result was never in doubt, and Lancashire won easily by ten wickets. G loucestershire . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. W. G. Grace, c Nash, b A. G.
