Cricket 1883

2 8 0 CEICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 26, 1883. YORKSHIRE v. SURREY. The Yorkshire eleven obtained a very de cisive victory in their first match of the season with Surrey, played at Holbeok Ground, Leeds, on Monday and Tuesday. The wicket, at its best favourable to the bowler, was made worse for the batsman by the recent heavy rains, and high scoring was altogether impossible. The York- shiremen won the toss and were all dismissed for 116, three batsmen contributing 98 out of 112 from the bat. Bates’ 55 was a good display of free hitting without a chance, but otherwise there was little of note in the innings, and the last four wickets only added six runs. When Surrey went in they made a poor show, and Peate did an extraordinary bowling performance. In sixteen overs he took eight wickets at a cost of only five runs. He was, of course, helped very materially by the ground, but none the less it was a wonderful feat, and Peate’s success is the more gratifying as this season li9 has been rather out of luck. Surrey were all out in an hour and five minutes for 31, or 26 from the bat, of which Maurice Read and Mr. Diver had sub scribed 23. The principal feature of the follow- on was tbe very good cricket shown by young Henderson. He made exactly one-half of the aggregate, and considering the extremely diffi cult wicket and the quality of the Yorkshire bowling his 41 was a most meritorious display of batting. His two innings of 67 against Lan cashire and 41 against Yorkshire fairly establish bis reputation as the most promising of the cricketers this season has produced. York shire won by an innings and three runs. Score and analysis Y orkshire . Ulyett, c L. A. Shuter, Emmett, c L. A.
