Cricket 1883
2 7 0 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. t o l y so, issa. illesex, and his debut for the Gentlemen against the Players, at the Oval, was very satisfactory, as his steady play at the close helped to produce the victory for tho Gentlemen by two wickets, and he was in when the winning hit was made. Mr. Stndd’s achievements of last year will be fresh in the minds of cricketers, and his brilliant cricket in particular against the Australians, at Cambridge and Lord’s, will not soon he forgotten. He was the only bats man of 1882 to score two innings of over a hun dred runs against the Australians, and it was chiefly to his brilliant batting that the Cantabs owed their memorable victory over the Colonial team. For the Marylebone Club and Ground, against the Australians, at Lord’s, he also scored 114, and twice within a week, in two of the best matches of the year, on the Marylebone Ground, ho was credited with an innings of three figures. Ho was more successful with the ball than with the bat for the Gentlemen against the Players, at the Oval, but at Lord’s his batting, with that of Mr. A . P. Lucas, was the feature of the match, and while they were to gether these two batsmen added as many as 201 runs to the score. Mr. Studd and Burton bore the brunt of the bowling for Middlesex last season, but most of the amateur’s achievements were with the bat, and he was able to claim the distinction of the highest average, in first-class matches,of any cricketer, amateur or professional, with an aggregate of 1,249 runs for 38 completed innings. Mr. Studd, though hardly on the whole so successful in scoring as was expected, proved to be one of the most useful all round members of the Hon. Ivo Bligh’s team inAustralia during the winter, and sinoe his return he has been credited with some fine performances, both in batting and bowling. His score of 175 not out against Surrey at the Oval, is his best display in the former department, but in bowling he has been consistently effective, and the accuracy of his delivery contributed very materially to the victory gained by Cambridge in the Inter- University match. Mr. Studd is certainly one of the very best all round cricketers of the day. He bats in most correct style, plays very hard, and with plenty of power, scores fast when he settles down, driving particularly on the off-side with great vigour and accuracy. He bowls medium pace round with a high delivery, and, as he breaks back and is always on the wicket, besides keeping an excellent length, he not only rarely gets punished, but as a rule is very successful in taking wickets. Indeed, when the ground helps the bowler at all, he i 3 ture to be very effective, as his height gives him a considerable advantage, and he is able to make the ball “ do ” enough to thoroughly puzzle the latsman. In the field if not brilliant he is safj and thoroughly reliable. As a cricketer, Mr. Studd has reached the foremost position, but he has also a high reputation as one of the best racquet players of the day. He did not repre sent Eton while there in the competition for the Public Schools Challenge Cup, but he asserted his superiority at Cambridge sufficiently to play in the single handed match against Oxford both in 1881 and 1882, and in the latter year he defeated the Oxford Champion C. F. H., Leslie, another prominent cricketer, by three games to one. ¥Jffi:^C0^K>B00K. 1/ payment has not been made for the season's scores in advance, each score , to ensure inser tion, must be accompaniedwith a postal order for One Shilling.
