Cricket 1883
266 CRICKET; A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. JULY 19, 1883. of Surrey was very loose, some fast scoring was clone by most of the Middlesex eleven. Mr. Ridley played very fine cricket on the whole for his 136, though he had more than one life to wards the close of his innings. Surrey wanted 296 to save a follow-on, but Messrs. Roller and Horner with Pooley played up so pluckily at the finish, that they nearly completed the task. Three more runs and they would have saved the follow, and probably the match. As it was, when they went in again they showed very moderate form, and Middlesex had an easy win. Mr. Diver, who is new to Surrey this year, played excellent cricket on the first night. He made 48 not out in half an hour, and his wrist play was especially smart. Mr. C. T. Studd took ten Surrey wickets for 140 runs. r. P. J. (le Paravicini, c Abel, b Horner .. 51 Mr. E. M. The Kentish eleven secured a very creditable victory, their first of the season, over Sussex in the return match played at Maidstone on Mon day and Tuesday last. The result was mainly due to the excellent innings of Lord Harris, and the effective howling of Mr. Christopherson and George Hearne, supported by good all round fielding. In the match Mr. Christopherson and Hearne bowled 153 overs, and of these 109 were maidens, Hearne’s 96 overs and 2 halls including as many as 69 maidens. Mr. Whitfeld, in the second innings of Sussex, went in with tho score at 22 for two wickets, and carried his bat out for an excellent as well as useful 53, more than one half of the runs got from the bat. His was the only score of over twenty runs in the match on the Sussex side. In the second innings the last six wickets only added 25 runs. Kent won by an innings and 36 runs. K en t . Hon. W.G.B.—A matchwas played at Hitchin between National Provincial Bank of England and Hitchin. TheBank, though22 in arrears on the first innings (95 to 73), tied their opponents in the second innings with three wickets still to fall, time preventing the match being played out. The match is claimed by Hitchin on the first innings. Is this right? The stumps were drawn at G.30 and the last over was not finished, a wicket falling in the middle of it. (According to cricket, a match is not lost or won unless it is played out or given up. An agreement made between the parties, before hand, to decide by first innings would give the match to Hitchin. Agreements to decide by first innings have done much harm to cricket, and ought to be discontinued as much as possible.)
