The Yorksliiremcn exactly repeated the result of their first match with Lancashire in the return at Sheffield on Monday and Tuesday, winning amidst great excitement ■with eight wickets to spare. This time the Lancashire Eleven included Messrs. A. G. Steel and Royle, and except that Pilling was still absent owing to illness the County had its full strength. Yorkshire played three amateurs, Hon. M. B. Hawke and Messrs. Lumb, who had shown such good cricket against Leicestershire a week before, and E. T. Hirst. Peato was unable to play owing to an attack of lumbago, and Grimshaw, who had not been very successful recently, was left out of the team, Lancashire won the toss, but in a little over two hours they were all out for eighty-three, and of the seventy-nine from the bat, seventy-three were due to three batsmen. This result was due to the splendid bowling of Harrison and Ulyett, who equally divided the ten wickets. Harrison added another to his many fine performances of a first season, but Ulyett’s exploit was even more noteworthy, bowling Mr. Hornby, Watson and Briggs with successive balls. The good bowling of Crossland, Barlow, and Watson prevented Yorkshire having an advantage of more than ten runs on the first innings, and when play ceased at the end of the first day Lanca shire were only nine runs on, having lost two wickets in their second innings. Barlow and Mr. Royle played good cricket for Lancashire on the second day, but the Yorkshiremen bowled and fielded up well, and the total only reached 127. With 118 for Yorkshire to win there seemed every chance of a good finish, but Ulyett and Hall effectually settled the hopes of Lancashire, and ninety-four was scored before Ulyett was caught for a brilliantly hit sixty-one, in which was a square leg hit for six out of the ground. Hall showed all his wonted patience for his thirty, and the match was ultimately won by Yorkshire with eight wickets to spare. Out of the thirty-two wickets twenty- one were bowled. In the two days 19,000 persons paid at the gates, and the play was watched with the greatest interest. Score and analysis:— L an cash ire . Second Innings. First Innings. Mr. A. G. Surrey, after making a very creditable fight in the first innings, against a long score of 373 by Middlesex, made a poor show when they went in a second time, and were beaten in this return match at Lord’s by ten wickets, Middle sex thus exactly reversing the result of tho previous match.. The Middlesex eleven was a very strong one, and as Barratt was so lame as to be practically unable to bowl, and the fielding
