Played at Eltham on July 14. LANCASHIRE v. SURREY. After having all the worst of the first day’s play in this match, begun at Manchester on Thursday, the Surrey eleven made such a plucky fight that they very nearly pulled through, being only beaten on Saturday afternoon by three wickets. On the first night, after getting Lan cashire out for 204, Surrey had lost seven of its best wickets for 4G. Thanks to a well-got 43 by Mr. Roller, they were, after all, only in a minority of 105, and when they went in again the aspect of the game was altogether changed. Mr. Read and Henderson made a determined stand, and while they were together they scored 184 runs. Mr. Read gave no chance till he had obtained 78, but afterwards he was missed five times. The youngster Henderson played very fine cricket, and his sixty-seven was a great performance, considering it was his first appear ance against the Lancashire bowlers. On Satur day the finish was very exciting. At luncheon time Lancashire had got 113 out of 196 to win for the loss of six of their best wickets. After this Briggs, who was missed when he had made 40, hit away freely, and finally Barlow who made only 89 out of 151 scored while he was in, and Mr. Steel won the match for Lanca shire by three wickets amidst considerable ex citement. The victory was in a great measure due to the good all-round cricket of Barlow. In his two innings, he scored 110, and in addition took ten Surrey wickets for 118 runs.
