The Surrey eleven were able to claim a second victory over Sussex this season yesterday at Brighton, when they won the return match with two wickets to srare. Mr. Newham played very fine cricket each time for Sussex, but with the exception of Mr.Whitfeld’s secondscore of 66 not out,the result of excellent cricket, the batting was not up to the usual standard. Mr. Cattley and Abel made an excellent start in Surrey’s first innings, and the first wicket did not fall until 106 were scored. When play ceased on Tuesday nignt, Surrey had made 73 out of 136 wanted to win, with five of their best wickets down. Mainly, however, through the good bat ting of Pooley and Mr. Horner, the runs were got yesterday with two wickets still to fall. Score and analysis :— S ussex . First Innings. Mr. G. N. The Yorkshire eleven gained a very creditable victory over Lancashire in the first match of the season between the Counties, played at Manchester, on Thursday and Friday last. Neither Messrs. A, G. Steel nor Royle could play for Lancashire, and Robinson, owins to an injured finger, was also an absentee, so that the home team were not seen at their best. Chiefly through the effective delivery of Harrison, the new fast bowler of Yorkshire, the Lancashire eleven were all dismissed for 79, the smallest total recorded to them for some time. Harrison did a splendid performance, taking seven wickets —five bowled—at a cost of 43 runs. Hall and Lockwood played good cricket, and it was mainly owing to their joint efforts that York shire were able to claim an advantage of 61 runs. In their second innings the Lancastrians only showed a slight improvement, and York shire made the 57 runs wanted to win, for the loss of two batsmen, Hall and Lockwood a^ain playing excellent cricket. Lancashire lost by eight wickets, their first defeat this season. Out of 191 runs scored from the bat by York shire, Hall, Lockwood, and Bates alone contri buted 150. The attendance was verylarge on both days. On the first it was computed to number nearly 16,000. L ancashire . First Innings. Mr. A. N. Hornby, b Harrison 12 Second Innings. R. G.
