Cricket 1883

JULY 5, 1883. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 231 NOTTINGHAMSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. The Nottinghamshire eleven gained a very creditable victory by nine wickets over Yorkshire in this return match, played at Nottingham on Monday aud Tuesday last. Mainly through the tine bowling of Alfred Shaw, Notts had an ad vantage of 00 runs on the first innings, nine of the Yorkshire eleven being only able to realise an aggregate of nineteen runs. In the follow on, Ulyett did some very fine hitting, and at luncheon hour on Tuesday the Yorkshire score stood at 61 without a wicket down. Up to this time the wicket had played fairly well after the heavy rain of Monday night, but as it dried under the sun on Tuesday afternoon, it was all in favour of the bowling. Ulyett hit in brilliant form, and when he was out—the second wicket at 83—he had made 61, in which was a Rla3hing drive out of the ground from •.'VVright for six. After his departure Yorkshire again came to grief, and out of 111 from the bat, Ulyett, Bates, and Hall contributed 95. Notts got the 25 wanted to win for the loss of a wicket. Lockwood, owing to an injury, was unable to play for Yorkshire, and his careful batting was sadly missed. The chief feature of the Nottingham cricket was the bowling of Shaw and Flowers. Middlesex beat a strong eleven of Kent at Lord’s on Tuesday last, with six wickets to spare. The Kentish batsmen made a very poor show in their first innings against Burton’s bowling, and Middlesex, mainly through the good play of the Captain and the three Cantabs, Messrs. C. T. Studd, Paravicini, and Henery, were able to claim an advantage of 143 runs when they took he field the second time. After the heavy rain of the previous night, the wicket helped the bowlers on Tuesday, and it seemed as if Kent would not save the innings. Seven of the best batsmen were out for 83 runs, but thanks to the fine cricket of Mr. L. Wilson, and the plucky hitting of Mr. Christopherson, the last three wickets added 116. Middlesex had 57 to win, but they lost four good wickets before the runs were got. It is worthy of note that of the four teen Middlesex wickets eleven weie bowled. K e n t . First Innings.
