Cricket 1883
2 1 4 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e s, is83. were his”93 v. England at Canterbury, 88 v. Surrey, and 76 v. Sussex. In 1872 be bad formed one of the team which visited America and Canada under the leadership of Mr. E. A. Fitzgerald, and the winter of 1878 sawhim on another cricket tour as captain of the fifth English team that had visited Austra lia. He was second in the batting averages to Mr. Hornby, but his return to England found him less successful, and in 1879 Messrs. F. Penn and W. Foord-Kelcey both headed him in the Kentish averages, though owing to the death of his father-in-law he was not able to take part in more than twelve innings In 1880 he figured in all the thirteen matches played by Kent and with signal success. His best innings that year was 123 against Surrey, but he was also credited with 74 against the Gentlemen of England at Canterbury, and in all for 21 innings he had a fine aggregate of 689 runs. Absence from Eng land deprived the Kentish eleven of Lord Harris’s valuable services during a greater part of the season of 1881, but last season found him in even better form than he had yet shown, and his average of 41 runs for fifteen innings was a brilliant one. For Kent against Sussex at Gravesend, Lords Throwley (82) and Harris (176) made 208 runs for the first wicket, but the latter rarely failed to make a good score, and against Middlesex and Yorkshire he was particu larly successful, scoring 72out of 195,and 101 out of 188 against the former at Canterbury, 62 v. Yorkshire at Sheffield, and 51 and 54 at Gravesend. His best performance of the present season has been his score of 118 v. Lancashire at Man chester, and the batting shown by him in con junction with Mr. R. S. Jones when 166 runs were added to the first total of Kent, was some of the best seen this year. Of his untiring energy in the cause of Kentish cricket too much cannot be written in praise. No one has laboured with greater devotion towards the pro motion of genuine cricket, and the handsome testimonial presented to him during the course of last Canterbury week in recognition of his services for Kent might well have taken a wider scope in appreciation of the aid he has given to county cricket generally. As a bats man Lord Harris is in the very front rank. He hits very hard all-round, and always plays the game thoroughly under every kind of cir cumstances, with the same pluck in losing as winning. In the field he is brilliant, being very safe, and in the out-field particularly smart, with a sharp return to the wicket. Lord Harris is a Captain in the East Kent Yeomanry Cavalry. He married in 1874 Hon. Lucy Ada Jrevis, daughter of Yiscount St. Vincent. Dark the blue of Doris’ eyes, Dark the ribbons of her bonnet, Surely Oxford wins the prize, Seventeen to one upon it. Chloris’ eyes are lighter blue, Hat of corresponding colour, Cambridge has success in view, Oxford blue is so much duller. Now the match is near an end, Both beside me gaily prattle, Neither side will I offend, Neither side has won the battle. Modern Society. I n a match between Didsbury and an Eleven of Longsight on June 23, Messrs. VV. and A. M’Lachlan, for Didsbury, put on 177 runs for the first wicket. The former carried his score to 157 before he was bowled. The total reached 315 for 7 wickets. ¥ F E v g C 0 ^ E :-B 0 0 K .
