202 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e as, u»; NORTH v. SOUTH. P ooley ’ s B en e fit . The match between North and South, played at Kennington Oval on Thursday last and two following days, for the benefit of Edward Pooley, the Surrey wicket-keeper, proved a distinct success in every way. Rain interfered with the wicket somewhat on the first day, but afterwards there was nothing to prejudice the chances of the batsmen. Still the scoring on both sides was below what might have been expected, and the match, which was rather in favour of the bowlers throughout, ended, after an exciting finish, in favour of the North bytwer.ty-two runs. Neither side had its full strength, but the game was well contested, and some fair cricket was shown, particularly by Hon. M. B. Hawke and Lock wood for the North, by Mr. A. P. Lucas—whose first appearance it was at the Oval this year— Maurice Read and Hearne for the South. The fielding of the Southerners was very loose, when the Northwent in a second time and their chances were thereby greatly reduced. The best feature of the match was the bowling of Woof for the South. Iu the two innings of the North, he took twelve wickets at a cost of 127 runs, and he has never bowled with greater precision or judgment. Not one of the Northern batsmen was bowled in either innings. N or th . First Innings. Ulyett, c Lucas, b Woof . . 20 Barlow, 1b w, b Grace.. . . 33 Hon. M. B.
