Cricket 1883

198 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. june as, lm. ances. Some of hia achievements in the way of run-getting on going in first with Barlow, whose unwearied defence has made him an ex cellent foil to Mr. Hornby’s hitting, have been really extraordinary, and only recently, for Lancashire against the Marylebone Club and Ground, at Lord’s, the two batsmen got seventy- five runs, and won the match without the loss of a wicket. Mr. Hornby is, without a doubt, the most popular cricketer of the day. His enthusiasm for the game is unbounded, and he never spares trouble, money or time to help. in the promotion of good cricket. No benefit match but finds him an active supporter, and in him professional players have always had a true friend. As a cricketer, too, he has had very few superiors. His batting all round is remarkable for vigour and, indeed, when he get3 set, his powers of punish ment, whatever the bowling, are exceptional. As a field, too, he is unequalled, and whether in the long field, where he covers any amount of ground, or close to the wicket, he is equally safe, though being ambidextrous, his ability has had better chance “ in the country.” As a cricketer Mr. Hornby’s name will always be regarded with respect and affection, but he has also distinguished himself in other branches of sport. He played several times for England in the International Rugby football matches, and was Captain of the English fifteen the last year he played. He is also an enthusiast in his love of the chase, and rides particularly well to hounds. Mr. Hornby is a Captain in the East Cheshire Militia, and is said that at the next election he will in all probability seek to add the letters M.P. to his name, after the example of his father and elder brother, Mr. E. K. Hornby, who was in the House a few years ago. T P E v £ C 0 R E v B 0 0 K .
