The Cambridge University eleven brought their trial matches to a successful conclusion on Tuesday at Lord’s, when they defeated a strongish eleven of the Marylebone Club and Ground by 81 runs. The batting in the first innings of each side was not up to the mark, but on the second day it improved materially. Mr. J. E. K. Studd played good cricket, and Mr. Paravicini again hit hard and well both times, scoring the highest aggregate on the Cambridge side. When Marylebone went in with 295 to win, some excellent batting was shown, but despite a plucky effort with only ten men to go in they proved unequal to the task. Barnes’ 72 was a fine display of cricket. His hitting all round was very clean, and it is worthy of note that his seventy-two included only six singles. In the University’s second innings Mr. J. Studd was in while 165 runs were scored. Sherwin hurt his shoulder in catching Mr. Wright—a fine piece of cricket—on the first evening, and was unable to play afterwards. T h e U n iversity .
