Cricket 1883
JUNE 14, 1883. CEICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 175 SUSSEX v. YORKSHIRE. The Sussex Eleven gained a glorious victory over Yorkshire at Sheffield yesterday. Their success was the more noteworthy, as the team in the absence of Messrs. Whitfield, Trevor, M. P. Lucas, Blackman, and Newham was anything but the best they could have placed in the field. It was only the plucky play of the two last batsmen, Peate and Harrison, that saved Yorkshire from a follow on. A. Hide’s bowling proving so effective that Peate was the highest scorer with 29 not out. Yorkshire went in with 185 to win, and when play|ceased Tuesday had secured 81 for the loss of four wickets. Yes terday Lockwood and Hall raised the total to 123 before the former was bowled. Sixty-two were then wanted to win, with five wickets to fall, but Hall found no one to stay any time ■with him, and Sussex gained a famous victory with only three runs to spare. After the splendid form shown this season by Yorkshire they are to be warmly congratulated on a really brilliant achievement. Score and analysis : S u ssex , First Innings. The Cambridge eleven won the first of their London matches yesterday, when they defeated an eleven representing the Orleans Club at Twickenham. The Orleans team had to follow on in a minoiity of 223 runs but Mr. I. D.Walker’s brilliant play in their second innings entirely altered the aspect of the game, and the Univer sity lost four wickets in the attainment of the 51 runs required to win. Unfortunately, after being not out with 102 on Tuesday night, Mr. Walker sprained his side severely aud was unable to continue his innings yesterday. This was a great misfoitune for the Club, and indeed but for this accident, the University might have experienced great difficulty in winning. As it was, the game ended much more favourably for the Club than could have been at one time anticipated. Mr. Mansfield played a fine innings of 117 for the University, though it was not without chances, and Mr. Henery, who it was feared would not be able to play this year, got his 76 by good free cricket. Messrs. J. E. Stndd and Wright put on 107 for Cambridge’s first wicket at the commencement of the match. The University won by 6 wickets. C am brid ge U niversity . First Innings. J. E. K.
