Cricket 1883
JUNE 14,1883. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 171 SURREY y. MIDDLESEX. The Surrey Eleven succeeded in gaining their second victory of the season at the Oval by their defeat of Middlesex on Friday. The team which represented Middlesex, in the absence of Hon. A. Lyttelton, Messrs. J. E. and C. T. Studd, C. F. Leslie, and A. P. Lucas, was only a moderate one, but on such an excellent wicket as that provided they ought to have been worth good scores, and Surrey certainly did well to get rid of them twice for such totals as 183 and 95. Mr. Ridley played very fine cricket for his second score of fifty-three, but no one else, when Middlesex went in a second time, got double figures, and considering the excellence of the wicket this re flects great credit on the bowling of Barratt and Johnson, who were unchanged throughout. In this as well as the Gloucestershire match Johnsonbowled extremely well, andLei approved a decided acquisition to the Surrey eleven in these two matches. Messrs.W.W.Read, Shuter, and Roller, all played good cricket, and Mr. Roller’s hitting was one of the best features of the Surrey batting. Surrey won by ten wickets. Score and analysis :— S urrey .
