After making a plucky fight with—in the absence of Messrs. W. H. Patterson, Tylecote, Renny-Tailyour, and A. Penn—quite a second- rate eleven, Kent were beaten by Lancashire at Manchester yesterday. The chief feature of the match was the fine stand in Kent’s first innings by Lord Harris and Mr. R. S. Jones, who made 166 while they were together. Both batsmen played the best cricket, and at the end of an innings the Southerners were 303 runs to tho good. In the follow on Mr. Hornby, who had contributed eightv-eight to Lancashire’s first total of 206, was even in better vein for hitting, and this time he was credited with ninety-six runs. He was at the wickets three hours and a quarter, and his hitting throughout was most powerful. Kent went in yesterday, with 136 to win, but Barlow and Watson bowled with such effect, with the wicket to help them, that the eleven were all dismissed for sixty-five, and Lancashire thus secured a creditable victory by seventy runs.
