Cricket 1883

JUNE 7, 1883. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 147 M.C.C. AND GROUND v. DERBYSHIRE. Derbyshire, though well represented in this match at Lord’s on Thursday, was beaten by a not very strong eleven of M.C.C. and Ground in an innings with 29 runs to spare. The success was mainly due to the good all-round cricket of Flowers, who in addition to scoring 181 out of 220 from the bat took ten wickets of Derbyshire at a cost of 86 runs. Messrs. R. P. Smith and Docker were again the principal scorers for the County. D e r b y sh ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. R. P. The Surrey eleven following quickly on their huge innings against Hampshire did another big performance in run getting to finish their match against Gloucestershire at the Oval pn Friday last. At one period of their first innings it looked as though they would not be able to avert a follow-on,and it was only the very plucky and excellent play of the two diminutive youngsters, Abel and Henderson, that enabled them to get within seven runs of Gloucester shire’s total. When they went in a second time they wanted 208 runs to win, and as the wicket "'as in splendid order it was really anybody’s fiame. With three of their best wickets, those of Messrs. Shuter, Cattley, and Hender son, down for 07, things seemed to be in favour pf Gloucestershire. Then Mr. W. W. Head joined his nannSdke, the professional, and the 'jestern bcwliag was treated to some of the heaviest punishment it has ever received. Maurice Bead ought to have been caught at long-on by Mr. Nichols from Woof when he had 63, and later the same fieldsman ought to have caught and bo vied him. These were the °nlj mistakes in his inning3, which was remark able for some very fine all-round hitting, more especially to leg. Mr. W. W. never gave a chance, and the two Reads rattled off the runs at a tremendous pace, winning the match for Sur- *ey with seven wickets to spare. There was immense excitement at the finish ; indeed with he exception of the Australian matches, such enthusiasm has not been shown at the Oval for many years. The 208 runs required by Suney "ere got in an hour and fifty minutes. In Gloucestershire’s first innings the two brothers Grace and Mr. W. R. Gilbert contributed 155 out of 171 from the bat. In the second innings Henderson, the Surrey Colt, who bowls medium round arm with an easy delivery, sent down 77 balls for 17 runs and 6 wickets.
