Cricket 1883
146 CRICKET; A "WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. j u n e 7 , 1883 . urning once more, at the close of the last Eng lish season, to the land of his adoption, he took part in some of the principal Australian fixtures, and more than once figured against the Hon. Ivo Bligh’s Eleven with success. He was chosen as one of the Eleven of United Australia against the English team, and his brilliant in nings of ninety-two not out for Victoria, in the final engagement of their tour, contributed very materially to the decisive defeat of Mr. Bligh’s party. As Midwinter has definitely an nounoed his intention of remaining permanently in Australia it is to be assumed that he is really lost to English cricket, and, already, Gloucester shire has shown how much it feels the loss of his services. As a cricketer he had great advan tages. His height—he stands 6ft. 2£in.—gives him the benefit of unusual reach as a batsman, and in addition causes his delivery to be very effective, especially where the ground helps him in any way. He has good defence combined with very great hitting powers, and indeed there are few more vigorous hitters. He bowls me dium pace, round, with considerable work from the off, and as his delivery is high, he is at times very successful. In the field he is useful any where, but more especially in the out-field, as he is a sure catch, and can throw well. He has been fortunate enough in certain mining trans actions, it is reported, to be able to give up the pursuit of cricket as a profession. At least so it is said, he has joined the ranks of the amateurs, in imitation of two great English cricketers, to wit—II. Daft, originally, though, an amateur, and George Freeman. I n a cricket match played at Dorchester on Saturday, between the local eleven, and a team representing the Dorset County School, Mr. J. W. Fudge took eight of the School wickets at a cost of 1 run.
