Cricket 1883
1 4 4 CRICKET ; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. MAY 31, 1883. AN SW ER S TO CORRESPONDENTS. S. E. B. S.—1. When the Champion will appear again on the cricket-field ? — (He played at .Lord’s on Monday and Tuesday.) 2. Whether Mr. A. H. Heath, who is playing for England against Cambridge University, is a Gloucester shire gentleman, and i£ so will he play for that county this season ?— (Mr. A. H. Heath was born in Staffordshire, and though he played for Gloucestershire in 1865, while at Clifton College, has, we believe, now no qualification to play for that eleven.) 3. Who is the Surrey Captain this year ?—(Mr. John Shuter). C. W. S tiif . a tf e il d , Bycoed Vicarage, Wrexham. —(Mr. A. 0. Whiting is still in England, but he is unable to play for Oxford University this season, as he is going to return to Australia shortly). ‘f M ii >-O ff .'* —Would you kindly inform me whether, in the recent North v. South match at Lord’s, Mr. H. G. Tylecote fielded in the first innings of the Northerners, and, if so, for whom did Mr. Hawke field as substitute in that innings.— (Mr. Tylecote did not field in the first innings of the North. Mr. Hawke and others fielded as substitute on the first day. Mr. Tylecote was not in time for the first innings on the second day). D. S. (Brighton.)—Is a no-ball ” counted as one ball of an over. If not, and a “ no-ball” is hit for two runs (which runs of course .count to the striker), how is it to be scored in the bowling analysis ? Should not the runs obtained be placed to the discredit of the bowler. If so, where are they to be placed, seeing the no-ball is not counted in the over ? —(The no-ball does not count in the over, but it appears iu the analysis, and the runs go to the discredit of the bowler. S. G. F.-—A ball bowled, and being wide, was at once called “ wide ” by the umpire. This ball went to the boundary ; boundary hits, where this ball went, counting three runs. Long- stop mis-fielded the ball, allowing it to pass him, and three wides were claimed by reason of the boundary being reached by this wide ball in question. What runs are rightly to be counted in this question ? The fielding side say the ball is dead on umpire calling “ wide.” — (Three runs are counted to wides). J. W. O l iv e r , E.C.C.— (It is a wide on either side). W. W. D a v id — (Barlow’s Book on Cricket can be obtained of C ricket Press, 17, Paternoster Square). C. E. P.— (They were equally good, and there was nothing to choose between them, though Daft’s was the more elegant style). P A S T I M E : A Journal of Lawn Tennis, Tennis, Racquets, ’Cycling & Athletics.
