Lucas’ first appearance in the Mid dlesex eleven, for which he is entitled to play by birth, had very much to do with the successful result of the match played at Lord’s on Monday and Tuesday. Neither side had its best eleven. Several of the most prominent repre sentatives of Middlesex were absent, and Gloucestershire was also deprived of the ser vices of Messrs. Townsend, Moberly, and Cran ston. Middlesex winning the toss went in first, but the wicket had not as yet quite recovered from the Saturday’s rains, and the eleven were all out for 131. Mr. Robertson, who hit well being the Chief contributor. At the end of the first innings Gloucestershire had a leal of 48 ruus, Mr. W. G. Grace subscribing 89 or more than half the runs got from the bat. When Middlesex went in a second time the weakness of tha change bowling of Gloucester shire became manifest, and Messrs. Lucas, C. T. Studd, and I. D. Walker all scored well. Mr. Lucas h s rarely shown more polished cricket; he was in three hours and a half for his ninety- seven, and his play throughout was singularly correct. His chief hits were one six, eight fours, three threes, and nine twos. Gloucester-' shire weut in at 4.10 on Tuesday afternoon with 237 to win, and at one time when Messrs. W. G. Grace and Gilbert weio in, their chance seemed hopeful. Mr. E. M. Grace was caught and bowled at 26, and Mr. Taylor finely caught at mid-on. Mestrs. W. G. Grace and Gilbert brought the total to 100 for two wickets, but just as the three figures appeared the former was caught for an excellent innings of 35. Mr. Gil bert, who had played very steadily, wa3 caught, and this settled the last hope of Gloucester shire. The last seven wickets only added 49 runs, and Middlesex won at a quarter to seven o’clock by 85 runs. The victory was chiefly due to the good cricket of Messrs. Lucas and C. T. Studd. On Friday and Saturday last the Incogniti were located at Shoeburynass, where thej were most genially welcomed and entertained by the “ Gunners.” For the home team Coker, Wheble, and Maitland were the most conspicuous batsmen. For the visitors, Pontifex and Street batted soundly, but being short of bowling they had to put up with a dressing, and a drenching, too, on Saturday. S chool of G unnery , Capt.
