In the School’s first innings Robinson’s bowling was very good, as also was Toppin’s in the Town’s innings. In batting Grant, Scott, and Marshall did well for the School, and T. Played at Acton on Saturday last, and re sulted in a victory for St. Mary’s by 25 runs, owing chiefly to tbo good bowling of H. Carver and II, Butler, who took five wickets each at the small cost of 10 and 13 runs respectively. S t . M ary ’ s . W . Bliss, c Manley, b SURREY v. HAMPSHIRE. Some sensational cricket was the result of the first match ofthe season between these Counties, played at Kennington Oval on Thursday last and two following days. Hampshire, who won the toss, began well with a very creditable total of 229, Messrs. Wynyard and Wood, both of whom played excellent cricket, contributing exactly 100 runs while they were together. At the end of the first day Surrey had lost four wickets for 137 runs, of which Henderson, the Beddington youngster, who made his debut against Leicestershire, subscribed 39 by sterling cricket. Friday’s play at the Oval was pro ductive of some of the fastest run getting ever recorded in a good match. Three hundred and ten runs were made in three hours, and the Surrey eleven were not dismissed until they had reached the huge total of 650. The bigges* innings ever registered in an important match is the 775 of New South Wales v. Victoria in Feb., 1882, but Surrey’s score is seven runs more than the best previous record in an Eng lish match, the Australians’ 643 against Sussex at Brighton last year. An attempt was made to complete the game on Saturday, but play had ultimately to bo suspended owing to the heavy rain, after Hants had scored 98 for the loss of one batsman. Hampshire, when the game was concluded, wanted 333 runs to save the innings. In all 977 runs were scored for 21 wickets, or an average of 46£ runs for each batsman. This was the first match on the centre of the Oval since it has been relaid, and the wicket reflected the highest credit on the ground keeper, Newton. Score and analysis :— H ampshire . ROSS v. HEREFORDSHIRE COUNTY CLUB. Played at Ross on May 26, and resulted in a victory for the home team by an innings and sixty-six runs. The most noteworthy features were the splendid batting of Messrs. Taylor and Dawson, and the bowling of Messrs. Ursell and Walker. Score:— Ross. R. Wright, b Lewis .. 5 C. Walker, b Lewis .. 6 E. J. Taylor, c Ilatton, b Masefield....................53 E. M.
