The original intention of the committee of the Marylebone Club in arranging their programme for 1888 was to have provided a match between the Hon. Ivo Bligh’s Australiam team and an Eleven of England for the Whitsuntide holiday folk at Lord’s. Unfortunately, owing to the late arrival of some of Mr. Bligh’s party, another fixture had to be substituted, and in the absence of anything more suitable recourse had to be made to the once attractive but now rather unequal match of North v. South. As Surrey, Notts and Sussex were all engaged with County fixtures, and the Lancashire professionals were also playing elsewhere, neither side had its full strength, and the Northern eleven in reality consisted of Yorkshire players with Mr. Hornby and Wild. Rain interfered with the Bank Holiday, but none the less thero was a large attendance, and some excellent cricket was shown. At the close of play on the first day, the game looked fairly interesting, as the South, after getting their opponents out cheaply for 115, were thirteen runs on with two wickets still to fall. The features of the day’g cricket were the excellent batting of Lockwood and Mr. W . G. Grace. The Gloucestershire Captain gave one chance off Peate to Bates in the slips when the score showed 62, but all round his play was up to his best form, and his runs were worth much more than they represented, owing to the heavy state of the ground. He scored 64 out of 9(3 runs during his innings of less than two hours duration. His principal hits were seven four's, one a drive from Bates on to the top of the members’ enclosure, which necessitated the production of another ball. Mr. Tylecote being absent on the second morning, the Southern innings closed without an addition to the overnight total, Peate having taken seven wickets for <15 runs. When the North went in a second time tbe weakness of the Southern bowling became very apparent, and no less than eight <f the eleven were tried with the ball. Singularly enough, Ulvett and Lockwood, and Hall and Grimshaw, while they were together added each pair 83 runs to the Northern score. Ulyett and Grim shaw hit vigorously, and Hall was steadier almost than usual. The bowling, though, on the Southern side was very plain, and the cricket on the whole not so interesting as on the previous day. Mr. Grace unfortunately while fielding on Tuesday evening hurt his finger severely, and as hewa3 unable to batjyesterdty any outside ch an ce that the South might have possessed was destroyed. The wicket as it dried, too, was all in favour of the Northern bowlers, and none of the Southern batsmen except Mr. Lucas, who was in two hours for twenty-two runs, made any lengthy stay. Mr. Gilbert had 6cored fourteen over night, but none of the others could get double figures, and the North won by 170 runs. Peate again bowled with great success, taking five wickets for seventeen runs. Score and analysis Total....................... 53 Total 72 N o r th . First Innings. Mr. A. N.
