As last year, the Whitsuntide fixture on the Trent Bridge Ground at Nottingham was the first match of the season with Surrey. The Southern Shire made, it will be remembered, a good fight in the same match of 1882, but this time its eleven only made a poor show, and they were fairly outclassed. Neither side was fully represented, as Morley and Selby were absent from Notts, and the Surrey team was anything but the best, with Messrs. A. P. Lucas, Game, Horner, and Jones all away—the last-named, the most reliable bowler in the county, having not yet recovered from a severe illness. The ground was not in the best condition owing to the heavy rains, and the play suffered materially from the downpour on Monday. Surrey, who won the toss, at luncheon time on the first day had scored fifty for two wickets, but the tail gave a sorry exhibition, and the eleven were all out for 87, of which Mr. W. W. Read and Abel contributed 67. Mr. Read, who for the first time since his return from Australia, batted patiently and well for his 22, but the best feature of the innings was the form shown by the little professional Abel. He was in two hours and a quarter for his 45, and his play throughout was excellent. At the close of the first day, Notts had lost five wickets for 82, but the later batsmen all scored fairly and the total ultimately reached 188. Barratt’s one wicket cost 60 runs, and Mr. Roller had by far the best analysis, his five wickets only helping the Nottingham total by twenty-seven runs. Surrey wanted 101 runs to save an innings defeat, but no one except Mr. Read made any stand, and the result was an insignificent aggregate of 43. Notts thus won by an innings and 58 runs. Mr. H. W. Bainbridge, Yoss and Wood made their first appearance in this match for Surrey and A.Smith for Notts. Score and analysis: — S urrey . First Innings. Mr. J. Shuter, b Shaw.. . . 0 Mr. S. W.
