THE FRESHMEN’S MATCH. T here seems to be some promising batting among the players who have come into residence at the University since'last summer, to judge by the form shown in this match at Cambridge on Thursday and Friday last. The weather was anything but genial, and this had its effect on the cricket. The elevens, which were captained by the Hon. M. B. Hawke and J. E. K. Studd, contained several of the best Public School players of 1882, including the captains of Eton— H.W. Bainbridge— Harrow—Hon. E. W. H. Ward, Charterhouse—W. N. Cobbold, Upping ham—J. A. Turner, and "Westminster—W . C. Dale, besides C.*H. Leaf, of Marlborough, L. Sanderson, ofHarrow,'E. P. Spurway, of Charter house, and M. T. Baines, one of the Harrow eleven of 1881. By far the best show was that of the last named, who scored 104 and 48 by very fine cricket. He has plenty of reach and strength and plays hard, so that he ought to be of use. Bainbridge and Turner showed good cricket for Hawkes side, and Lewis’s 57 was a very fair contribution, Sanderson hit hard for his score of 32 not out. Eaton played H neat style in Studd’s second innings. A. N. Dorman, of Dulwich College (fast left), was the most successful bowler. The match was drawn. Score :— S tudd ’ s S ide . Fi-st Innings.
