In this match, played at Lord’s on Thursday and Friday last, Barnes and Midwinter performed a feat altogether without a parallel in cricket. On Thursday afternoon they came together with two wickets down for 19, and they were not separated until after luncheon on Friday, when the total was 473. They had thus added 454 runs after being together just upon five hours and a half. The largest number of runs previously made by one wicket in England was in 1870, when Messrs. G. F. Grace and I. D. Walker added 288 while together. Barnes was missed more than once, but his hitting was very fine, his figures being a six, four fives, twenty-six fours, twenty threes, fifteen twos, and singles. The largest score ever made at Lord’s is the 278 of Mr. W. Ward in 1820. Mid winter’s figures were a six, a five, twelve fours, fifteen threes, and twenty twos. The Marylebone total is the largest ever made at Lord’s. L e ic e ste r sh ir e . First Innings. Second Innings.
