Cricket 1882

MAY 25, 1882. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. 39 •*JF flE -:-gC 0^E ->B 00K * (Continued.) M.C.C. & G. v. YORKSHIRE. The Yorkshire eleven only showed very moderate form in this match, played at Lord’s'on Monday and Tuesday last, the Marylebone team was not a par ticularly strong one, and the defeat of the County— the second of the season—was rather a surprise, more especially after the form Uiyett, Bates, aud Peate had been showing in Australia. The ground certainly played queerly, particularly on the second day, but still the Yorkshire totals of 92 and 74were hardly up to their form. The easy win of M.C.C by eight wickets was mainly due to the effective bowling of Morley and Flowers. The Yorkshire- men indeed could do nothing with the latter, whose 12 wickets only cost 47 runs—a fine perfor mance. Peate bowled with success for Yorkshire, but Bates wa3 in no way up to the mark, either with ball or bat. Ulyett was stumped each time off Flowers. Score: — First Innings. Second Innings. Played at Shoeburyness on Friday and Saturday, May 19th and 20th, and owing to the heavy scoring left drawn. The wicket was wonderfully true and fast, and winning the toss gave the Incogs a great advantage, by which they did not fail to profit. The run-getting was exceptionally rapid, the first 200 being made in an hour and three-quarters. Hewson played extremely well for the School of Gunnery, and was unconquered. The hospitality shown was worthy of the reputation of Shoeburyness, and higher praise cannot be given. I ncogniti . E. J. C. Studd, c Bourns, b Hewson .................81 H. The Nondescripts found a perfect wicket and an unusually strong team awaiting them on their arrival at Sandhurst on Saturday last. The visitors winning the toss went first to the wickets and all promised well for them, their second wicket falling for 103, but here a total collapse took place, and the remaining batsmen only added 34 runs. For the College W. C. Oates, of Notts fame, and J. L. Kaye, late of Winchester College, opened the battery to the bowling of Blaker and Moore, the former of whom, however, soon caused the retirement of both these cracks, and matters looked well for the Non descripts ; but at this point the attack utterly broke down, and all the remaining batsmen, with one exception, all scored heavily, and when time was called only nine wickets had fallen for a total of 298.
