The Nottinghamshire executive ran something of a risk in the last county match of the season, begun at Brighton on Thursday. Shrewsbury had in jured his hand early in the week against the Austra lians. Barnes and Morley, though, were both available, and it might have been awkward had their absence to make preparations for the Austra lian tour been productive of a misfortune. As it was, Sussex, though fairly represented, with its usual perversity was unable to make two good scores in a match, or the game might at least have been saved. In the first inuings Mr. M‘Cormick of Hastings, a young amateur, played really good cricket for his 42 not out. He had hitherto failed to play up to his local reputation, but his batting on this occasion fully justified the trials he has had. His defence was good throughout, and his hitting, when he had got set, clean all round. Oscroft hit quite in his old style, but by far the best form on the Nottingham side was that of Mr. C. W. Wright, the Cambridge University wicket-keeper. He went in first and was last out just as he wanted one run of three figures. He played at first with great care, but when he had got used to the ground and bowling he hit with great confidence ; with the ex ception of two very hard chanceshe made nomis take. Notts won easily by ten wickets. Score and analyses :— S u ssex . First Innings. Mr. R. T. Ellis, b Shaw .. .. 2 Mr. H. Whitfeld, b Shaw W. Humphreys, b Shaw .. .. 9 H.
