Despite the fears that the superior batting of Middlesex would counter-balance the better bowling on the Yorkshire side, the bat had by no means the best of the ball in this return match finished at Sheffield yesterday. The highest of the four innings was Yorkshire’s second total of 159, and as many as 95 of the first innings of 135 were scored by the two first batsmen, Messrs. Walker and Webbe. Mr. C. T. Studd took ten of the Yorkshire wickets, but the best bowling in the match was that of Bates, who was credited with six Middlesex wickets in the first innings for 33 runs, and Peate also got eight in the second for 32 runs. Bates has recently been rather unsuccessful with the ball, but his perform ance on this cccasion was exceptionally good, his six wickets consisting of such batsmen as Messrs. Walker, Webbe, Leslie, C. T. Studd, Pearson, and Vernon. Rain had interfered with the wicket yes terday, and Middlesex, when they commenced, wanting 129 to win, had no easy task. Mr. Webbe was credited with a very unusual feat in carrying his bat right through the innings. His play very nearly won the match, but no one else except Messrs. Lyttelton and Vernon lent much aid. The Yorkshiremen, as it proved, had alittlo in hand, and won after a most exciting finish by 20 runs. Y o rk sh ire . First Innings. Ulyett, b C. T.
