250 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. august 24, issa. MIDDLESEX v. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. The spirited batting of Alfred Shaw and Barnes in this return match on Saturday at Nottingham saved Notts from the defeat which seemed certain at luncheon time on the previous day, The Middlesex eleven, though weakened by the absence of the two Studds and the two Lytteltons, punished the Nottingham bowling severely, occupying the wicket nearly the whole day for a long total of 352. The ;hief feature of the innings was the brilliant bat ing of Mr. C. F. Leslie. The Oxonian has been singularly out of luck this year, but his 141 will i;ive him the confidence that has apparently been jacking. It was in every way a fine performance, *nd cricketers everywhere will be glad to hear of ;iis success. Nine Nottingham wickets were down jor 67, but an unexpected stand was made by Shaw ;,nd Morley, and the pair added fifty for th e last Vicket. Notts had to follow on with a long score ►f 235 against them; but the spirited hitting of Alfred Shaw and the fine cricket of Barnes enabled hem eventually to draw the match. Shaw’s 88 is i.he highest innings he has made for Notts for a •ong time, and his plucky play did much to save ris side. Barnes’s 107 is the third score of over a jiundred he has made this season in a first-class jnatcb. He played all the Middlesex bowling with he greatest ease. His innings was a worthy ddition to a long list of brilliant performances his year. When play ceased on Saturday night sotts were 52 runs on with three wickets to fall, icore and analyses :— M id d l e s e x . Ir. I. D. Walker, c Sher win, b Scotton .. .. 79 Ir. A. J. Notts had only a weak team to oppose Glouces tershire in its return match, finished at Clifton yesterday. Morley had again broken down, and as Shrewsbury and Alfred Shaw were also absentees, room had to be found for Attewell, Wright, and Mills. The scoring on both sides was below the average, and not one of the three completed innings reached 150. Mr. W. G. Grace contributed 55 to Gloucestershire’s first total of 118, nearly one half of the aggregate. The best batting though on the Gloucestershire side was shown by the elder Grace (E. M.). His second score of 47 was cer tainly the most meritorious innings of the match. A violent storm on Tuesday night was followed by heavy rain at intervals yesterday, and at four o’clock the wicket had become so soddened that it was de termined to give up the match as drawn.
