GLOUCESTERSHIRE. This match, the first of the Cheltenham week, instituted four years ago by Mr. James Lillywhite, of that town, was concluded yesterday on the Col lege Ground. Both sides were strong in batting, but the scoring was not quite up to the average of previous years. Gloucestershire had the best of the wicket in winning the toss, but, with the ex ception of Midwinter, none of the eleven played up to their reputation, and the result was a rather dis appointing score of 144. Mr. Pearson was one of the principal contributors for Middlesex, and his 53 was the best if not the highest innings on the side. Mr. W. G. Grace, who had to be content with nine runs in the first innings, was finely caught at the wicket from the first ball delivered in the second. His brother 4 E. M., and Messrs. Mo berly and Gilbert tried hard to make the game bear a favourable aspect for Gloucestershire, but the wicket at times played very queerly, and the Mid dlesex fielding was so exceptionally good that run- getting was difficult, the catches which dismissed Mr. E. M. Grace and Midwinter being particularly fine. On going in yesterday with 93 to win, Messrs. Walker and Webbe hit freely, and the number wero got for the loss of two wickets. Gloucestershire had consequently to suffer another defeat by eight wickets. Score and analyses :— G lo u c e ste r sh ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. W. G. Grace, c A. Lyttelton, c A.
