W The club was very weakly represented, five of the best men being prevented by accidents and the war in Egypt from taking part in the tour. The visit to Belfast had also to be given up the present season. The three matches played were favoured with the finest weather, and the wickets were good, but fielding on the Phoenix Club Ground continu ally necessitated jumping over the enclosure railings. A very strong eleven of the Phcenix had everything their own w ay; but in their last match, the Emeriti turned the tables on the Civil Service, while their match with the U.L.Y.C. ended in an ex citing finish. Six of the Emeriti were run out in the two innings, otherwise a defeat by 16 runs would have been an easy victory. Notwithstanding their weakness, the Emeriti team met with every hospitality, and thoroughly enjoyed the week’s cricket. EMERITI v. PHCENIX. Played at Dublin on August 7 and 8 . E m e r it i . A second defeat awaited the Somersetshire eleven in this return match played at Taunton on Monday and Tuesday. They were much better represented than on the first meeting at Manchester, but they were not strong enough for such a team as that of Lancashire, even with Mr. A. G. Steel away. Mr. P. Taylor, who.has played little for Lancashire this season, was the only batsman who made any long stay, and they were cheaply got rid of for a total of 178, a result chiefly due to the effective bowling of Mr. Evans, who took six wickets for 75 runs. In their first innings, Somersetshire only made a very poor show, and they had to follow on in a minority of 104, Barlow doing an exceptional piece of bowling with four wickets for seven runs, When they went in a second time, Mr. Newton played good steady cricket, and Messrs. Ramsay and Roe hit freely, They weretfyjg enabled tQpvit their opponents in
