After beating Yorkshire at Manchester by only 16, Lancashire made even a closer fight at Clifton at the end of last week with Gloucestershire, whom they just managed to defeat by the bare majority of 13 runs. Barlow, whose praises we have had so ;often to sing, did another great performance in going through Lancashire first innings for 58 out of ‘240. Robinson, whose hitting powers were suited by the Gloucestershire bowling, and Messrs. Hornby and Taylor were conspicuous on the same side, which was without Mr. A. G. Steel. Mr. VV. G. Grace, who is thoroughly showing his form now that the wickets are more in favour of the batsman, played another fine first innings of 86 —one worthy of him in every way. The best batting of the match was that of Mr. E. M. Grace in Gloucester’s second innings. He had not previously done much this season, and therefore his success was the more popular. At one time it looked as if he was going to pull the match off for Gloucestershire, but the bowling of Nash, who took six wickets for 85 runs, turned the scale in favour of Lancashire. A cricketer whose name is new to us in connection with Lancashire made a very favourable impres sion. He hit with great freedom in his first in nings, and his 80 was the highest score on the side. MIDDLESEX v. KENT. As two days sufficed to bring this match to a close, the week finished on Friday night with its completion. Middlesex, winning the toss, made a long score of 338, to which Messrs. Pearson, C. I. Thornton, and Vernon were the principal contri butors. Mr. Pearson’s 88 was an excellent display of cricket, but Mr. Thornton had some luck in his 70. With the exception of Lord Harris, who has never played better cricket, the Kentish batting presented no noteworthy features, and Mr. Tyle cote was the only other member of the eleven who got into double figures each time. Lord Harris’s first score of 72 contained no chance, and his second was without fault until he had made 82, when he returned one to Burton. The Hon. A. Lyttelton and Mr. Thornton, when they went in to get the runs, made 46 runs in less than twenty minutes. Burton took nine Kentish wickets for 118 runs. Middlesex, as will be seen, won by ten wickets. Thus ended the most successful week Canterbury has had for some years, one especially memorable, not only for the visit of the Australian players, but also for the presentation of the memorial to Lord Harris.
