On the form of the first match at Sheffield, though Lancashire had not the valuable help of Mr. A. G. Steel, there was very little to choose between these elevens. Their equality was still more marked in the return, finished at Manchester on Saturday, and the end was singularly exciting. Barlow was in three hours and a half for his first score of 68 , and this was by far the highest individual contribution of the match. Peel, the young Yorkshire bowler, again proved his undoubted ability, and his per formance in taking five Lancashire wickets in the first innings for 41 runs was a highly creditable one. For once Ulyett did not get double figures, and the match was in some degree remarkable for the fact that Peate, who hit freely each time, was the highest scorer on the Yorkshire sidt. In the second innings the Lancashire team were all dis missed for 97, and this, as Yorkshire were left with 158 to win, made the game very open. Emmett made a plucky effort to pull Yorkshire through, but the Lancashire bowling was just a trifle too good, and the Yorkshiremen were left in a minority of 16 runs at the finish. In the first innings U1- yett was stumped through the ball rebounding off the Lancashire wicket-keeper’s pads. Score and L an c a sh ir e . First Innings. Mr. A. N. SUSSEX. In spite of a promising commencement Sussex had to put up with a defeat in this match played at Nottingham on Thursday and Friday last. The Southerners missed the help of Messrs. M. P. Lucas, Bettesworth, Trevor, and Whitfeld, while Notts had all its strength. On the first day Sussex had all the best of the game, having scored 186, while the home team had lost three wickets for 62 runs. At the end of an innings Notts were 38 behind, but when they went in a second time Sussex only made a poor show against the bowling of Shaw and Morley, and the eleven were all dis missed for 56, nine of them only contributing 23 runs. Notts had 95 to win, but they lost four wickets in their attainment, Sussex being ultimately beaten by six wickets. Mr. Newham played ex cellent cricket each time for Sussex, and Hide confirmed the promise shown in the match against Surrey at the Oval by his good bowling. Flowers hit freely each time for Notts, and iu the second innings Shrewsbury’s 40 were exceedingly well got. Score and analyses:— Fust Innings. Rev. F. F. J. Esher were strongly favoured, but Jones’s bowling was too good for them, and they were beaten easily. Messrs. Birley and Harvey made 125 for Mitcham’s first wicket. The bail from the ball by which Jones bowled Mr. Wigram went 45 yards, 1 foot, 11 inches from the wicket. E sh e r . First Innings. Mr. A. C. White, b Harvey 0 M. Read, c Birley, b Jones 31 Mr. C. C.
