202 CRICKET ; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. a u g u s t 3, issa. LANCASHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. As at Nottingham at the commencement of the week, the Gloucestershire eleven had the worst of the luck in this match, finished at Manchester on Saturday. They suffered materially in losing the toss, and the wicket, as it dried after the rain, was all in favour of the Lancashire bowlers. Barlow and Mr. Steel had nine of the ten Gloucestershire batsmen on the third day. The former took five wickets for IS, and Crossland also had five wickets in the first innings for only 17 runs. Robinson, who has been rather unfortunate for Lancashire this year, hit feebly but with some luck for his 63. The best batting of the match, though, was that of Midwinter on the third day, and it was his plucky play alone that enabled Gloucestershire to avert an innings defeat. As it was, Lancashire won easily by seven wickets. Score and analyses: L an c a sh ir e . First Iunings. Mr. O. P. Lancashire, Townsend, b W. Grace Pilling, b Midwinter Briggs, b W. G. Grace .. Still another success for the Australians in this match finished at the ground of the Liverpool Club yesterday. The local eleven was a strong one, iucluding the four Lancashire professionals, Barlow, Crossland, Briggs, and Watson, but the excellent all-round play of the Australians again stood them in good stead. They began badly on the first day, losing four wickets for 37 runs, but Giffen and Horan, by fine cricket, brought the score to 152 before they were parted. Giffen’s 81 is the highest score he has as yet made in England. Their score of ‘210 was a very useful one, particularly as rain prevented any play on the second day ; the ground was consequently in favour of the bowlers yester day, though a stiff breeze had dried it more than might have been expected. Mr. A. G. Steel batted well each time, but except Mr. Jones, whose de termined play saved Liverpool from an innings’ defeat, no one else made any stand. Palmer and Boyle bowled unchanged throughout the match, a very unusual occurrence. The Australians won by nine wickets. A u stralian s . Total 59 Total ..109 H. H. Massie, b Crossland 10 A. C. Gloucestershire sustained another defeat a Sheffield yesterday, when it was beaten by York shire by 29 runs. Both sides had their full strength, but the ground was a trifle slow from the recent rains, and the scoring was on the whole below the average. Both the Brothers Grace failed to score on the first day, but a useful stand by Mr. Townsend and Midwinter was of great service, and Gloucestershire had a majority of 8 runs at the end
