For the first time this season Surrey had a hard wicket at the Oval on Monday last when they began their return match with Kent. Neither side had quite its full strength. The loss of the Hon. Ivo Bligh and the two brothers Penn of course materially weakened Kent, but, on the other hand, the Surrey eleven was by no means representative, with Messrs. Lucas, Gattley, and Roller all away. The Surrey captain, who has been singularly un lucky this year in the toss, was fortunate enough to get the innings, and though the wicket at times played queerly to Mr. Foord-Kelcey’s bowling, some fast scoring was recorded. Mr. W. W. Read hit very freely, and his 117 was got without a mistake. His success was the more popular, as he had recently been a little out of luck. Last year against Kent at Maidstone Mr. Read scored 160, and in the return at the Oval 72. Mr. Game, though a little uneasy at first, hit with great vigour, and his drive for seven is the only hit of that value made in a county match at the Oval for a long time. Pooley, when the Kentish bowling was fairly collared, let out in quite his old style. Mr. Key, of this year’s Clifton College eleven, made his debut for Surrey. He shaped well for his runs, and will probably be of use. Surrey scored 359 in four hours and a half, or at the rate of 80 runs an hour. On Monday night Kent lost three good wickets for 28 runs, and on the following morning they were all out for 56. Jones bowled exceedingly well, taking five wickets for 18 runs, but the collapse of the eleven was a great surprise. In the follow-on Messrs. Tylecote and Patterson played very fine cricket, and while they were together they put on just 100 runs. At one time 190 was up for only two wickets, but the innings came to an unexpectedly early close for 230, Surrey winning by an innings and 73 runs. Mr. Patterson gave two chances to Jones, one a hard one at short-leg, but otherwise the Surrey fielding was \ery good, and, indeed, on both sides it was much above the average. Jones took eight Kent wickets for 61 runs. Mr. J. Shuter, b Lips comb.............................. 25 Mr. C.C. Clarke, b Wootton 6 Mr. W. W. Read, c Jones, b Wootton ..............117 M.
