The ill-success of more than one of the batsmen on whom Surrey has most to rely effectually de stroyed any outside chance the eleven may have had in this match at the Oval on Thursday and Friday last. Neither Lockwood nor tlie Hon. M. Hawke were able to play for Yorkshire, and Haggas, who has not appeared in the county eleven for a few years, and Peel, the new slow bowler, took their places. Mr. Shuter, who has been singularly un lucky in this respect throughout the season, lost the toss, and, as there was heavy rain on Thursday night, Surrey had again all the worst of the wicket. Barratt made his first appearance in the Surrey eleven since he broke down at Sheffield on the 12th July, and he was very successful with the ball, taking seven wickets for 74 runs. Except for a very well-played 38 by Jones, who bids fair with care to be about as useful with the bat as he has been with the ball, the Surrey batting in the first innings was altogether disappointing. In the second, with one exception, it was even wor.^e. Indeed, had it not been redeemed by Mr. Sbuter’s brilliant score, the display would have been a very sorry one. Mr. Shuter gave two hard chancas when he had got 30, but afterwards there was not a flaw of any kind in his batting. He had to play with the greatest care at times against the fine bowling of Yorkshire, but he punished the few loose balls he had heavily, and at the finish he was scor ing very fast. Yorkshire won by eight wickets. Peel made his first appearance in London iu this, match; he bowls slow round left, very much after Peate’s style. If anything he is a trifle slower, but his delivery is almost identical. He keeps a good length, varies his pace judiciously, and shows every promise of being a good bowier. Score and ana lyses :— Mr. R. Sidgwick, st Pooley, b Barratt..........................3 In the second innings, Hall (c Abel, b Barratt) scored 2, Ulyett (not out) 46, Bates (c Abel, b Horner) 12, Grimshaw (not out) 6; total, 66. The Australians claimed another very easy vic tory on Friday, when they defeated the Gentlemen of Scotland on the Grange Ground at Edinburgh. The Gentlemen included moie than one player well known to Englishmen, including Messrs. J. M. Oot- terill, of Sussex, who played with the Gentlemen against the Players iu all three matches of 1877, A. Pearson, one of the Oxford eleven of 1878, and Mr. J. G. Walker, of this year's Oxford team. Sp>fforth and Bannerman stood out of the Austra lian eleven. Murdoch played good cricket for his 58, but P. Thompson, a right-hand fastish bowler, was very successful with the other members of the team, and his analysis of 50 overs for 47 runs and seven wickets was an excellent one. He took all the last six batsmen. When the Gentlemen went in Palmer and Boyle bowled with such success that no one could make any long stand. They each took ten wickets, but Boyle’s figures were the better, only 49 runs being made from his bowling. The Australians won by an iunings and 18 runs. A supplementary match was played on Saturday. As it was in no way a test of the merits of the two sides, it does not warrant full details. C. \V. Beal and Bannerman played for the Australians in place of Blackham and Horan, and there were several changes on the Scotch side. Gift'en was the only one of the chief bowlers tried by the Australian captain. The Gentlemen scored 167 (L. M. Balfour 73), Australians 122. A u stralian s . ' H. H. Massie, b Craig .. 12 W. L.
