Cricket 1882
JULY 27, 1882. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 187 SURREY v. KENT. Surrey won its first raatcli of the season with Kent at Maidstone yesterday. Rain on Monday and Tuesday caused the wicket to be fairly easy for th batsmen, and the two first innings produced an aggregate of 499, with an advantage of 35 runs to Surrey. Yesterday, however, the ground, as it dried after the heavy downpours, was really un playable, and the fast bowlers had things all their own way. Surrey, who had overnight made 25 for the loss of one batsman, were all dismissed for 77, Mr, Foord-Kelcey’s expresses securing seven wickets for 27 runs. Kent had only 111 to get to win, but the ground was too difficult fori anyone to do anything with the fast bowling of Mr. Horner, who was credited with eight wickets for 35 runs. Lord Harris was in 50 minutes for five runs. Surrey ultimately won by 54 runs. K r x t . First Innings. Lord Harris, c and b Barratt .. 40 O. Hearno, run out ..................14 Mr. E.F. S. T he weather, which has spoiled so many fixtures °f late, in a great measure ruined this match, finished at Sheffield yesterday. Considering that fte proceeds were devoted for the benefit of one of the most deservedly popular professionals who have ever appealed to the public, this is very much be regretted.' The attendance, despite the rain the two first days, was large, and it is to be hoped that a good round sum will have been netted for Lockwood. Only an hour’s play was possible on the first day, and as none took place till after lun cheon' on Tuesday, when the game was resumed yesterday morning only ten wickets had fallen. J-he wicket played so treacherously yesterday, as it dried under the sun, that none of the batsmen on either side could do much. The game was ulti mately drawn, Yorkshire wanting 63 to win, with six wickets to fall. L an cash ire . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. A. N. Hornby, b Peel .. .. 6 c Peel, b Peate .. .. 19 Mr. C.
