As was only to be expected, the Australians gained a very easy victory on Tuesday in this match, played at Gosforth, Newcastle-on-Tyne. At one time they seemed likely to get rid of the Australians for less than a hundred, but Garrett and Horan upset their calculations, putting on 93 for the last wicket. The Northumbrian batsmen could do nothing against the Australian bowling, particularly that of Palmer. The ground, it may be stated, was altogether in his favour after the recent rains, but his analysis was very noteworthy — 102 balls for 27 runs and 11 wickets. The Aus tralians won by an innings and 95 runs. A u stralian s . W. L. Murdoch, b Bookless 2 H. H. Massie, b Ogilvie .. 3 T. Horau, not out .. .. 76 P. S. M‘Donnell, b Ogilvie 20 G. J. The first match of the season between these counties was played on the Trent Bridge Ground at Nottingham on Monday and Tuesday. The Glouces tershire eleven have in previous years made some long scores, but the wicket was this time all in favour of the bowlers, and the home eleven in going in first had all the best of the luck. In the second innings of Gloucestershire Messrs. W. G. Grace and Cranston played good cricket, but Flowers’ bowling was too good for the rest. He took six wickets for 22 runs, and it was mainly to him that Notts owed its easy victory by an innings and 26 runs. Mr. Moberly was absent from the Gloucestershire eleven.
