Some extraordinary cricket marked the progress of this match at Lord’s on Monday and Tuesday. Mindful of the strength of Lancashire, the Middle sex Committee had collected a strong eleven, including the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton, who had not played before this season. A new fast bowler was tried in the person of Mr. C. M. Tuke, who has been very successful for the Chiswick and Rich mond Clubs. Lancashire, with Mr. A. G. Steel in the team, was able to dispense with the bowling of Nash, and the eleven, though Mr. Royle was absent, was fairly strong. Middlesex won the toss, but, with the exception of Messrs. Lyttelton and Vernon, both of whom hit well, only a very poor resistance was offered to the bowling of Crossland, Barlow, and Mr. Steel, and the two amateurs named scored 82 out of 123. The feature of the day’s cricket was the brilliant hitting of Mr. Hornby. As usual, he went in first with Barlow, and very severe punishment he administered to all the Middlesex bowlers. He made 131 runs in just as many minutes, and when he was out 180 runs had been made for the first wicket. Throughout the innings he hit with fearlessness, and it is worthy of note that this is the highest score he has ever made at Lord’s, and only his second hundred
