N o r t h a m p t o n s h ir e , WITH ALFRED SHAW As was only to be expected, the Australians had d difficulty in securing a most decisive victory in lis match, played at Northampton on Monday and uesday. For the first time Massie was an ab- intee from the colonial side, and as Blackham ad Boyle were both on the sick list, the secretary, tr. C. W. Beal, had to play. In the second in- ings of the county the two old Cantabs, the rothers Pigg, showed some good cricket, but after le.score at one time showed 57 for three wickets, ie innings closed for 68, and the Australians won y an innings and 80 runs. Palmer’s bowling was ie most noteworthy feature on the Australian de. His analyses showed 38 overs and 3 balls, 18 laidens, 56 runs, 10 wickets. Murdoch’s team ave now played fourteen matches, of which ten »ve been won, three drawn, and one lost. N ORTHAMPTONSHIRE. First Inning*, r. J. Furley, b Spofforth .. .. 9 fljE. W. Neither side had quite s full strength, and Surrey was again unfortunate i practically losing the help of its best bowler, Dnes, who broke down again from the effects of the strain he received in the match between Surrey and Gloucestershire at the Oval. Messrs. Lucas and Trevor played good cricket in the second in nings, but otherwise the Sussex batting was only very moderate. The feature of the match was the excellent batting of the Surrey captain, Mr. John Shuter. He hit quite as freely as of old, and every one will be pleased to see him again in the vein for run-getting. Pooley’s wicket-keeping,’ too, deserves special praise. In the second iunings of Sussex he had a hand in the downfall of five batsmen, three caught and two stumped. Surrey won by nine wickets. Score and analyses :— S ussex . First Innings. Rev. F. F. J.
