ICC Intercontinental Cup and Shield

Umpires Seventy-six on-field umpires have stood in the five Intercontinental Cup competitions and one Intercontinental Shield. Twenty-three come from Associate and Affiliate countries and the remainder from Full Members. It is difficult to discern a policy in terms of the selection of on-field umpires. Some 50% have stood only in one match. Sometimes an umpire from an Associate country has stood alongside one from a full-member country, chosen from either the Elite or International Panels, which seems a sensible policy, enabling the less experienced umpire to gain from serving with a more experienced one. On other occasions, the opportunity seems to have been taken to use less experienced umpires from Full-Member countries perhaps as a channel for them eventually to be promoted to the International Panel. There are also several instances of two umpires from the Associate countries standing together with either one or both coming from one of the countries involved in the match. The concept of neutral umpires does not seem to have been a prerequisite for their selection. The most positive outcome has been the recognition that there are potentially some excellent umpires among the Associate countries and these are now being chosen to stand in official one-day internationals. Perhaps, soon, one or more of these will warrant promotion to the International Panel since this should comprise the best umpires in the world and not just among the Full-Member countries. The umpires are listed below by name followed, in parenthesis, by their country and the number of matches in the Intercontinental Cup and Intercontinental Shield in which they have officiated. Details of dates and places of birth are in the same format as that used for the player profiles in the previous section. The experience of each umpire is described in terms of the number of Tests and one-day internationals officiated, including, where appropriate, the period of membership of any ICC Umpiring Panels. Where an umpire has previously played cricket at first-class or List A level, this is summarised. Statistics correct to 31 March 2011. Profiles are provided only for the on-field umpires since these are always known. This is not the case with the reserve umpires or the match referees. These are listed, where known, in the scorecards presented earlier but are not included here. Ahsan Raza (Pakistan, 1 match). b 29 May 1974, Lahore, Punjab. 2 ODI, 1 IT20. rhb. wk.
