Louch’s XI: Goldham, Aylward, Purchase, Freemantle, Fennex, Louch, Butcher, Boxall, Newman, Lord, Graham. Taking as an example Winchilsea’s XI on page 192 of Great Cricket Matches, note that the score, in dismissal order, is from the Sporting Magazine. This version is also in Britcher though here the amateurs have been moved up to the top, above the professionals. However, in Bentley, the amateurs are also at the top but, ignoring this for the moment, and looking just at the professionals, we see that Bentley has them in the order of going in, not of dismissal. The specialist batsmen come first and the tail-enders and bowlers come last. Note that T.Walker is first (among the professionals) and is not out 53 in a total of 90. If we take him as opening the innings, as we must if the Bentley order is to make sense, then we must realise that for the other ten players, the order of going in is also that of dismissal. By listing the professionals in the order in which they appear in the SM we see that it exactly matches Bentley. By using the SM dismissal order we can see where the amateurs batted and have the order we give above. This tends to confirm, as all versions of the score strongly imply, that T.Walker did indeed carry his bat through this innings. A similar procedure has been used in those four other matches on pp.188-191 where we have given a deduced batting order. 67
