Great Cricket Matches 1772-1800: The Players and The Records
109 Another source has slightly better batting orders, which suggests that the version in the book is in dismissal order. The new orders are: A to M: Brazier, Bedster, Bullen, Beldham, Taylor, Clifford, Booker, Mann, Louch, Lord, Harris. N to Z: T.Walker, H.Walker, Small sen., Ring, Fennex, Aylward, Small jun., John Wells, Purchase, James Wells, Stevens.* 110 Another version of the score shows Nyren as Nyland, substantiating the identification of Nyland as Nyren in the score on page 131.* 121 Another version in Hampshire (2) shows Purchase b Stevens 0, which would mean Hampshire won by three wickets, though this source does not record the result. As this version offers a more contemporary source than Epps, the oldest we had access to, this should perhaps be accepted as an authentic correction. However, it is not that simple. Small sen. was also b Stevens 0, so it is possible that the compiler of this particular score suffered a simple case of ‘eye slippage’ while looking at his original copy.* 127 Some contemporary sources give the match title as Amherst v Mann. 131 See note above to match on page 110 re identification of Nyland as Nyren. 132 Another contemporary version also includes Kennett rather than Venner who erroneously appears in the SB score.* 135 Another source has better batting orders. Hampshire: Freemantle, Scott, Small sen., Purchase, Small jun., Mann, Taylor, Winchilsea, Stewart, Louch, Harris. Kent: Pilcher, Clifford, Aylward, Brazier, Ring, Crawte, Crosoer, Bullen, Boorman, Dean, Palmer.* 136 Another source has better batting orders, though probably that of dismissal. Hampshire: Small jun., Aylward, Purchase, Foster, Scott, Small sen., Ring, Taylor, Mann, Freemantle, Harris. England: Brazier, T.Walker, Wells, Sueter, Crawte, H.Walker, Winchilsea, Clifford, Bullen, Beldham, Stevens. This moves Beldham to the bottom of the England order as he was not out. He certainly came in higher up, probably at No.4 or 5.* 138 The footnote says that Grover has been tentatively identified as John Septimus Grover. He was educated at Eton and he is found playing for the Old Etonians in a newly-discovered match from 1790 (it does not qualify as a ‘great’ match) which makes the identification less tentative.* 144 Another source has Beldham batting at No.2 for Winchilsea’s XI and the other players from T.Walker to Brazier moving one place down with Bullen at 10 and Butcher at 11. This suggests that the version in the book is in dismissal order.* 151 Add Miller’s initials: J.E.A.R. 196 MP 13/8 has better batting orders. Surrey: Winchilsea, T.Walker, H.Walker, Beldham, Wells, Crawte, J.Walker, Louch, Hampton, Tufton, Milsington. England: Ring, Hammond, Freemantle, Small, Bullen, Purchase, Boxall, Cumberland, Dehany, Brudenell, Harris. 240 Add Heneage’s initial: E. Pages 271-273. The ‘Lost’ Great Matches In sixth line of introduction, delete ‘the’ between ‘all of’ and ‘them’. Pages 286-294. Index of players Further research has provided extra information on some of these.
